An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is one of the most common, and most cost-effective, wellbeing benefits a UK employer can offer. The short answer on whether it is worth it: for most employers, yes. EAPs are inexpensive, usually around £10 to £15 per employee per year, and the EAPA reports an average return of roughly £8 to £11 for every £1 spent. The catch is take-up, which is often low, so the value depends on promoting it well.

PerkIQ does not sell EAPs. This is an independent guide: we take no referral fees or commission from providers, and where we can, we use our provider relationships to get discounts for our users instead.

What is an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)?

An EAP is a confidential service that gives your employees free access to counselling and practical advice, usually available 24 hours a day by phone and online, and often with a number of face-to-face or video sessions. It is there for both work and personal issues, from stress and mental health to money worries, bereavement and legal questions.

What does an EAP cover?

Most EAPs provide short-term counselling, a 24/7 helpline, online resources and manager support lines. Common areas include mental health and stress, relationship and family issues, bereavement, debt and money worries, and practical legal information. The aim is early, confidential help before a problem grows into long-term absence.

Is an EAP worth it?

EAPs are cheap relative to most benefits, and the EAPA's research reports a strong average return, in the region of £8 to £11 for every £1 spent, mainly through reduced absence and improved productivity. The figure varies by year and provider, so treat it as a guide rather than a guarantee. The biggest risk to value is low usage, which often sits at around 10% to 12%, so an EAP only pays off if you actively promote it.

How much does an EAP cost?

Standalone EAPs typically cost in the region of £10 to £15 per employee per year, with the per-head cost falling as your headcount rises. Some are bundled into private medical insurance or wider wellbeing products at little or no extra cost. Pricing varies, so get a quote based on your exact employee count.

Is an EAP a taxable benefit?

Generally no. EAP welfare counselling is usually exempt from tax when it is made available to all employees on similar terms. The exemption does not cover medical treatment, or advice on finance, tax, legal matters or leisure, so it is worth confirming exactly what a specific EAP includes with your accountant. This is a common point of confusion: many employers assume an EAP is a taxable benefit when, in most cases, it is not.

Is an EAP mandatory in the UK?

No. An EAP is not a legal requirement. However, employers do have a duty of care for their employees' health, including mental health, and an EAP is one of the most widely used and affordable ways to meet that responsibility in practice.

How to choose an EAP provider

Look for accredited counsellors, the range of access channels (phone, online, video and face-to-face), whether family members are covered, clear anonymised usage reporting, and how the provider will help you promote the service. Strong promotion support matters, because usage is the single biggest driver of value.
